I am interested in how we are interacting with new compositional tools. In addition to my ongoing work in DIY digital filmmaking (aka "cruel auteurism"), personal cinema, and documentary production, I am intrigued by the selfie. Early in my career, my energies contemplated how a "self" could measure up to postmodern critiques. I continue to enjoy studies on the self, our conceptualizations and performances that hope to articulate self-hood, and how digital photography amps up our engagements with digitally-mediated representations. Lately, I am sensitized to how these representations are configured as "branding." And especially troubling is public shaming involved in the circulation of even one badly uptaken online tweet, update, instagram, selfie, and etc., etc. Some scholars are exploring selfies beyond the shaming (see Jill Walker Rettberg's work), and I hope to explore what spaces we find for theorizing selfies as tools that move us toward increasingly critical consumption and production of cultural texts.
